March 7th

Q: On a scale of 1-10 how clean is your house (10 being the cleanest)?

A: Without a major purge/clean-out of old storage things, I think the best we could do would be an 8. I'd say right now we're at a 6.5. That's pretty good at the end of a long work week, I'd say!

Friday, February 28, 2014

February 28th

Q: What stresses you?

A: Not knowing what process to follow to get things done. Sudden changes to a plan that I've made. People that I care about getting sick.

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

February 26th

Q: What is annoying you?

A: Politics in general, politicians in specific. Poor laws. Corporate lobbyists. Pretentiousness. Arrogance. My own faults. Aging, but only a little.

February 25th

Q: What is your super power?

A: Hmm...well the age old question about what super power would you pick if you could pick one is easy. Unlimited speed. There are just so many applications from pro sports to crime fighting (or crime committing).

However, I will give you one that feels like a super power sometimes. The ability to understand culture quickly. I am very good at looking at context clues in the environment and determining the appropriate way to act. This can be socially (harder for me) or determining an available course of action (very natural)

This happened to me on a train in England once. Some announcement was coming on about a train derailment and stations being closed and my group looked to me to decipher the garbled message and route us around using the posted maps. I was able to do that readily!

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

February 19th

Q: What has challenged your morals?

A: The Internet.

Thursday, February 13, 2014

February 13th

Q: What book are you reading right now?

A: I'm delighted to be reading my friend's unpublished memoir. It's sad and great. Look for it Spring of 2015! It doesn't have an official title yet, so...good luck looking!

Monday, February 10, 2014

February 10th

Q: What did you buy today?

A: Various food products. Including: Brownie Brittle!

Sunday, February 9, 2014

February 9th

Q: What time did you go to bed last night?

A: I was probably out by 1 o'clock.

Saturday, February 8, 2014

February 8th

Q: What is the largest TV screen in your house.

A: I'm not sure. I think maybe 50 inches? I don't even know how to measure these rectangular TVs. Someone gave it to us, which is great!

Friday, February 7, 2014

February 7th

Q: Name a person you wish you didn't have to deal with today.

A: I abstain from answering this one publicly. It's hurtful.

I wish I didn't have an answer.

Thursday, February 6, 2014

February 6th

Q: If you could do today over again would you change anything?

A: Probably. I think I overreacted once at work. And I ate an extra cookie. Not bad though; many great things happened today!

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

February 5th

Q: On a scale of 1-10 how is your health?

A: I'm going with 8. I eat bad stuff. I don't sleep enough. I have too much fat. And I don't exercise in the winter. But Spring is coming! And then at least one of these things will change!

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

February 4th

Q: My favorite color is...

A: Green. The most emerald of greens is great. Green with a little yellow is nice. Green with too much blue is kind of gross.

Monday, January 27, 2014

January 27th

Q: How much did you spend at the grocery store the last time you went?

A: I don't usually do the shoppin' 'round here. So, it's a small amount: $2.18.

Sunday, January 26, 2014

January 26th

Q: Today the temperature was...

A: 29 degrees Fahrenheit. Almost above freezing. It's been 5 consecutive days below freezing.

Here is a relevant comic: https://www.xkcd.com/1321/

January 25th

Q: What is your favorite thing to drink?

A: Probably some kind of fruit smoothie. Without ice in it. Does smoothie always mean ice? If so, I mean the type of drink where they grind up fruit and make it into a thick yummy thing. Whatever you call that!

Saturday, January 25, 2014

January 24th

Q: What are you looking for from life?

A: Deep.

I'm looking for opportunities to help people travel through life a little more smoothly. Less stress, shared lessons learned, and help where it's wanted. The people are most frequently people I care about, friends and family; co-workers. This is a very good question. What are you looking for from life?

Thursday, January 23, 2014

January 23rd

Q: What made today unusual?

A: Denim. For the 3rd consecutive day I wore jeans to work. Usually I wear my office uniform of khaki's, but I went casual due to things like snow and ice and salt. The MLK day holiday on Monday and tomorrow's normal Friday jean wearing will combine for one whole week out of uniform!

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

January 22nd

Q: Tomorrow will be better because...

A: Tacos? No, I'm really not sure. How could I know? Alright, I won't cop out. If I'm able to be patient and kind at work tomorrow, then it will be better than today!

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

January 21st

Q: Today I wish I had more...

A: Tacos.

January 20th

Q: What is the hardest thing you're dealing with?

A: Probably trying to figure out how to manage my time. Enough recharge time vs. enough work (at home and work) vs. enough relationship time with family and friends. I know that everyone has to work these things out, but I'm finding it challenging right now.

Sunday, January 19, 2014

January 19th

Q: My current favorite website is...

A: I recently got to use needtomeet.com to coordinate finding a meeting time for a group of people. It works by one person creating a meeting on the site and inputting when they are available to meet. Then they invite everyone else to the meeting. Then everyone else goes there and inputs their availability. Finally, you see where there is overlap and report the results. Very nice and useful!

I used it to schedule a celebration dinner and trophy presentation for an NFL Pick 'Em league that I am a part of. This will take place at a local buffet...obviously.

January 18th

Q: The best part of today was...

A: Today we hosted a celebration at my home. One year ago, my brother-in-law was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. It was very serious; to the point that his doctors did not expect him to live through the first night. There were many unexplainable and miraculous coincidences--God moments, I like to think--throughout his care and eventual recovery. Over and over his doctors were surprised at the speed and degree of recovery. Many patients with this type of infection die. Those who do not survive as a shell of their former selves; dealing with blindness, deafness, and severe brain damage. In my brother-in-law's case he has had to deal with none of the above. He is himself.

Today we celebrated the healing and recovery that have occurred from that terrifying night last year. We thanked the creator of the universe for his mercy and celebrated the network of people who supported my brother-in-law and his family throughout those months.

January 17th

Q: What are you grateful for?

A: Not surprisingly, the answer is: my wife!

Okay, I could get away with using that answer for a third straight day, but I won't. I mean, I am certainly grateful for my wife; perhaps more than anything else. But also my job, which is very gratifying; my kids, who are just so fun and interesting; my friends, who all take good care of me and let me be weird; and on and on. My wife helps me in all these areas though. She understands when work is stressful and helps me cope. She understands when our kids are acting like terrorists and commiserates with me. She understands that sometimes I need time away from friends and people and lets me do that too.

Thursday, January 16, 2014

January 16th

Q: Who are you in love with?

A: Not surprisingly, the answer is: my wife!

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

January 15th

Q: Who last called you on the phone?

A: Not surprisingly, the answer is: my wife!

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

January 14th

Q: What did you get done?

A: Today? Well, I had a very meeting day at work. Arrived at 9 and left at 4:45. In between I had meetings scheduled from 9:10 - 9:25, 9:30 - 9:50, and then straight through 10 - 4. Pretty cool, huh? I skipped one to eat lunch.

Monday, January 13, 2014

January 13th

Q: What did you have for dinner?

A: Pork chops and apple crisp! Also salad with some kind of cheese. Also ice cream. Bring on more food questions.

Sunday, January 12, 2014

January 12th

Q: What is making you mad?

A: Politicians usually make me mad. Or maybe it's the political system that locks out different ideas. Or maybe it's lobbyists. These things all make me mad enough that I try not to think about them too often, because really, there's not much I can do about any of them.

Saturday, January 11, 2014

January 11th

Q: What's your favorite accessory?

A: Uh...hmm...I guess this list might be slanted for the ladies. It's okay! I can adapt! I'm going with wireless video game controllers.

Friday, January 10, 2014

January 10th

Q: What made you smile today?

A: Above freezing temperatures. I don't live in the coldest place on earth, but this week temps have been close to zero Fahrenheit. It is glorious to have a slight warm-up from the brutal chilliness.

Thursday, January 9, 2014

January, 9th

Q: What is your current favorite snack?

A: Nice. I like sticking with the food theme. I'm going to say Chick-fil-A's peppermint chocolate chip milkshake. It's only available for a limited time each year around Christmas time. I've had...a lot...of them recently.

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

January 8th

Q: What was the last "good" thing that you ate?

A: Ah ha!!! I eat food everyday, so this is a great question. I'll define "good" as "delicious," and say that I had an extremely unhealthy 5 Guys bacon cheese burger recently. It was "good" and included (in addition to bacon and cheese): lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, relish, and A.1.® Steak Sauce.

It was gooooood.

January 7th

Q: Can people change?

A: Yes. It is hard to change, but with the right kind of support people are capable of a lot. What helps?

The accountability of friendship. People who know what you're trying to do and that will check in with you to see how you're doing as you try. It can be a great motivator and also a great get back on trackivator.

Belief in a higher power. Yes, the AA thing. I know many folks "don't do God," but as millions of people will tell you, belief in a plan that is outside of you and a power that can support you in times of weakness can be a great help. Of course, they won't actually tell you, because they're anonymous.

Rock bottom. A great force in changing things up is the moment that you realize that things are just absolute crap and you've got to make some different choices.

All valuable, in combination and alone. Change!

January 6th

Q: What possession could you not live without?

A: To be literal, there are probably no possessions that would cause my death if I did not have them. So I'm going to be a bit more superficial here, and I think that's kind of the point anyway. I'm going with: my phone.

A couple days ago I parked in a no-no spot. It was a conscious choice and as we were exiting the car my friend and I decided to risk it. As it turned out, that was a mistake.

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast together and then walked outside. Relieved to see the car still there, we decided to step into a book store across the street. As it turned out, that was a mistake.

After perusing the shelves of the fun, quirky book store we walked outside. My car was gone. We were probably in the store for about 15 minutes. Later we found out that the car was towed away about 5 minutes before we walked out of the shop. What happened next was a testament to the power of my phone:

  1. Called towing company to find out they had my car.
  2. Mapped how far it was to the towing company (too far to walk).
  3. Looked up a cab service on the internet on my phone.
  4. Called cab service, got cut off.
  5. Called back and clarified.
15 years ago this would have been all pay phones and crying.

January 5th

Q: What was the last major accomplishment that you had?

A: This is feeling a little like an interview. Major, huh? Oh I know. I used the Internet and figured out the secret location of where they film VEEP. That's pretty good, right?!?

Oh, you want to know?

Shhh...

January 4th

Q: What is your best memory of last year?

A: Wow. A year is a long time to try to remember everything that has happened, but this memory is pretty good.

In early 2011 my dad got sick and eventually died of leukemia later that same year. That began a very difficult time for me and I struggled with some moderate depression after for over a year. That is not a good memory, is it? Well, stay with me.

About every six weeks I get together with a few dear friends to talk about how our lives are going and what we think God wants us to pursue. We've been doing this for a few years now, and it's a checkpoint that helps all of us focus on what is important (and what's not). It was during a meeting last Spring that I began to realize that I was moving out of that depression. I had energy and things were interesting and I wanted to do things. It was a great feeling.

January 3rd

I still eat food everyday, but is there more to the world? I'm not committing to anything, but I was recently intrigued by the idea of answering a question everyday.

Credit for that idea belongs here: Long on Staying, Slow to Leave
The questions that I'm using are here: Questions

I haven't read many of them, I hope there are no embarrassing ones...

Q: Are you content?

A: In some ways. It's really difficult to admit to being content because I always have room for improvement. I'm very happy with my relationships with wife, kids, and friends. My job is challenging and gratifying. Those things are all moving along in roughly the right direction. None are perfect, but nothing ever is. I wish my house was in a little better shape, but I like living there. Okay, I've talked myself into it. I am content!

Sweden

I really like the Swedish flag. The variant version is even better, but I'm not sure how those little pointy parts would hold up in wind. Might be a disaster.

I don't think I know any Swedes, but there was that one woman in A League of Their Own. I leave you with a link to their theme song.

Caution! There are ladies in underwear in that clip. Close your eyes and just listen.

I don't know what this blog is about now.

Communism

Well, I'm not updating, so I just post this comment from my mother!

"When I was in 7th grade, I said that [girl] scouting was more like communism than democracy and really upset all my leaders. I didn't know I was being politically incorrect, but just thought that all the communal camping activities, etc. seemed more like the communal farms etc. that we had heard about in Russia. Oops! That was during the cold war, which I also didn't really know anything about at the time."

Thanks Mom!

She also commented about my diet, but I'm not posting that (unflattering) part. It's down there if you want to read it. It's also true!

This blog is now about Sweden.

Ovaltine

If you ever think about starting a blog where you have to update 3 or more times a day, I recommend that you discard the idea. It's just silly.

That being said...it's time for a food related posting.

I've heard quite a few commercials about Ovaltine on the radio. Usually it is compared to Hershey's syrup or Nesquick. Many of the commercials feature kids who are rabid for the stuff. I know that commercials are mostly just lies, but something else I now know is that none of those kids who like Ovaltine have ever tasted Hershey's syrup or Nesquick.

I had opportunity to taste a chocolate milk-like beverage made from Ovaltine recently. It tasted just like chocolate milk...that had been poured over coffee grounds...watered down...and mixed with 5 smooth stones from a nearby brook.

Well, that's that. From now on this blog is about Communism.

Lunch

Standard lunch. Except, a little cup of organic applesauce instead of a banana.

Once again, only 5/6 Spiderman shapes.

Breakfast

Standard Breakfast. Except, we didn't have bananas. I had about 22 red, seedless grapes instead.

Thursday, January 24, 2008

Dinner

Went to Così and had their Alpine Chicken hearth baked dinner (Grilled chicken and three cheeses in Alfredo sauce. Topped with bacon and bread crumbs.). It was delcious and came with a salad. The salad was average.

Also had about half of an order
of warm chopped spinach and artichoke heart spread served with triangles of Così Bread. Così Bread is the bread that they make at Così, simple right?

I drank two cups of Coca-Cola.

Afternoon Hot Cocoa

I almost feel obligated!

Lunch

The new standard lunch.

Although, both today and yesterday, only 5 out of six different shapes in the Spiderman fruit snacks. Too bad.

Breakfast

Standard Breakfast.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Late Night Snack

Ate one doughnut from Krispy Kreme. It was still warm.

Dinner

Pasta with meat sauce, Caesar salad, little croissant things.

Additionally, one glass water and one glass chocolate milk. Both in actual glasses.

Late Afternoon Cocoa

In a Styrofoam cup.

Something has occurred with our cups at work. They have become company-branded!! This is exciting, our company is doing so well that we can afford branded Styrofoam cups!! I will probably get a huge raise!!

Then I realized that the logo on the cups is our old logo. These cups have been sitting in some closet and someone just found them. A relic of the "good old days". I'll probably be fired tomorrow.

Lunch

Standard Lunch, except for...

I had 2 "fudge"-covered peanut butter cookies.
I had grape jam instead of jelly. Maybe you're wondering what the difference is?

Breakfast

Standard breakfast.

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Evening Snack

I ate a couple handfuls of popcorn that I found in a bowl in my kitchen. I hope it wasn't popcorn that fell on the floor that someone then put back into the bowl. My brother and his friend caught me with that one once.

Dinner

I ate two chicken legs, one chicken thigh, two helpings of noodles, cooked sliced carrots, and garlic broccoli.

For dessert I had a warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream.

I drank a can of Diet Barq's Root Beer, but I poured it into a cup first, without ice. Because ice is evil.

Afternoon Cocoa

In a Styrofoam cup.

The cocoa is free at work!

Lunch

Standard Lunch:

Two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (grape jelly, creamy peanut butter), some Nacho Cheese Doritos, a banana, fruit snacks (Spiderman), two Styrofoam cups of water, 3 "fudge" covered peanut butter cookies (square).

I get two cups of water at once because they are little.

Breakfast

Now we can establish standard meals

Standard breakfast:

Reece's Puffs, banana, orange juice.

Monday, January 21, 2008

Dinner

I ate one piece of bologna. I often eat bologna while things are warming up/cooking. Also, some green beans, a slice of cheese pizza with green crust (both from the green dinner), and two slices of homemade cheese pizza with standard crust. Then I ate a brownie.

I drank a glass of orange juice out of a yellow plastic cup.

Afternoon Snack

I ate one marshmallow.

MLK Day Brunch

I finished up some leftover corn cake casserole and some leftover curry chicken and rainbow rice from Friday's dinner. I also ate 2 pieces of bologna.

I drank two plastic cups (Jungle Book, from Burger King originally) full of orange juice.

Sunday, January 20, 2008

Post-Soccer Game Late Dinner

Grilled cheese sandwich, muenster cheese. Glass of water (glass).

We lost our soccer game, which is not unusual, but it was fun, which is usual.

Pre-Soccer Game Drug Cocktail Time

Four 200 milligram tablets of Ibuprofen. One Rockstar Juiced Mango-Orange-Passion Fruit energy drink. It's 50% juice and it makes me play better, right?

Lunch

I was in transit during lunch so I packed a lunch and ate in the car. Two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a few Nacho Cheese Doritos, two "fudge"-covered peanut butter cookies, one pouch of The Amazing Spider-Man Fruit Flavored Snacks, one banana.

I drank one bottle of water.

Breakfast

I was in a hurry to go see my new nephew in Virginia. I ate a banana and had two cereal bars. I had a This Blueberry Walks Into a Bar blueberry cereal bar and a This Fig Walks Into a Bar fig cereal bar.

I did not drink anything.

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Late Night Snacks

Ate a bunch of the Hot Wing & Blue Cheese Doritos chips over the course of a few hours. Okay, I ate most of the bag. A 12.5 ounce bag.

Also ate two pieces of Hershey's Cacao Reserve chocolate. The first piece was milk chocolate that was 35% cacao (it's seeds are used to make cocoa and chocolate). It was fine, but nothing super special. I disclaim that I don't really like chocolate that much. The second piece was dark chocolate (which I strongly dislike) that was 70% cacao (all from São Tomé by the way). I ate it because it was the highest number and I wanted to win at eating chocolate. It matched all of my previous feelings about dark chocolate.

I drank 2 or 3 glasses of water. Not out of a glass though, out of a blue disposable plastic cup.

Dinner

Home brewed Green Tea was the drink. I had two glasses. Yum!

Homemade cheese pizza, the crust had green things in it. Also, green beans (canned) and Caesar salad. All in all, an extraordinary feat of greenery!!

Lunch

Ate some leftover Crock Pot Swiss Chicken. Also had a couple of bites of macaroni and cheese. I think I may have prepared the macaroni and cheese with a portion of expired butter. It did not taste very good at all. I ate one piece of bologna and one "fudge" covered cookie; at different times. Oh yeah, I also ate the last piece of the sweet pepper pizza roll thing from the other night.

Drank 1 large glass of chocolate milk (created with Hershey's syrup Breast Cancer Edition) and a few sips of chocolate milky water afterwards.

Breakfast

1 bowl Reece's Puffs cereal (yellow smiley face bowl). Also several grapes, perhaps, 5 or 6. They were red seedless. I drank nothing, except the milk at the end of my cereal, which I think is a civic duty. Just like careful driving. And voting. God bless America!!

Friday, January 18, 2008

Dinner

Ate a tasty dinner of rice (saffron?) with peas, apples, raisins, and red peppers. A rainbow of flavour! Also ate curry chicken and garlic naan.

I drank two glasses of water, consecutively, not simultaneously. And yes, that's right, a real glass!

Lunch

As usual, two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Also, some Hot Wing & Blue Cheese Doritos. Neither type of chip really tasted like either hot wings or blue cheese. That's not such a bad thing, because I don't like Blue Cheese at all. I was generally pleased with the taste which could be best classified as "Dorito" flavoured. I had two "fudge" coated peanut butter cookies. I finished off the eating with a package of The Amazing Spider-Man Fruit Flavored Snacks. I can verify that I received all 6 different shapes in this package. I saved them for last because I really like fruit flavored snacks.

Drank a 20 oz. Mountain Dew straight from the bottle, in addition to 2 cups of water (8 oz., Syrofoam).

Breakfast

Mmm...my wife bought Reese's Puffs, my favourite. I had a bowl of them! The bowl was a yellow, plastic, smiley face bowl. I also ate a banana, and drank a plastic cup of orange juice.

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Dinner

I ate seasoned french fries, cheesy broccoli soup, and some of each of a sweet pepper pizza roll and a jalapeno pepper pizza roll. For dessert, I ate a single chocolate coated peanut butter cookie. The package says "fudge", but come on, who are they kidding? I know what fudge tastes like, and sir, you are no fudge!!

Late Afternoon Snack

As I was leaving work, I had to wipe snow off my car. My snow wiper/sweeper/scraper was in the trunk. Also in my trunk, I found a bag of Gustados*. I had a couple handfuls. They'd been there a couple weeks, but I don't think that they were old enough to be included in the recall. I mean, I didn't taste any soy protein isolate.

*As a sibling product to the previously introduced “Festingos” line, this name for Nacho Cheese flavored tortilla chips from Ahold USA stores (including Stop & Shop, Giant, BI-LO, and others) connotes intense flavor while reinforcing the Hispanic heritage of the category.

Afternoon Snack

I drank some hot cocoa out of a Styrofoam cup. It's not really food, but I feel bad not reporting it.

Lunch

I ate two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (you'll be seeing that a lot here). The peanut butter was creamy and the jelly was grape.

I also had some very small pieces of tortilla chips. That's how it goes when you finish the bag.

Additionally, had a banana and some "Crazy Berries" Yogos Bits.

Drank two cups of water. These cups were both Styrofoam.

Breakfast

This morning we were out of milk, so I had strawberry-vanilla yogurt and a string cheese, instead of my normal cereal. I also ate a banana and drank a glass of orange juice. When I say glass, I really mean plastic cup, not an actual glass container. Sometimes I do use a glass though.
